Project: 2D modelling of colmation and decolmation for river restoration
Supervisors: Thorsten Stoesser and Bettina Bockelmann-Evans
Alex attended Cardiff University from 2012 until 2015 and graduated with a 2:1 Bachelors in Civil Engineering (BEng). During this time he undertook modules covering fundamentals in fluid mechanics, structural engineering, soil mechanics, computer programming, business management and surveying. Through these modules he completed group coursework including the design of a hotel structure in both steel and concrete to Eurocode Standards, the design of a storm water and sewage system for a housing estate and the design of multi-storey carpark.
Through his dissertation he developed a concept design for a submerged floating highway tunnel across Sognefjord in Norway. Whilst at Cardiff University, Alex volunteered for the charity Mothers of Africa as a finance coordinator for a project to install solar panels at a rural health post in Zambia. This was a nine month project where Alex facilitated the sourcing and purchasing of all the required materials and organised the logistical side of the project culminating in travelling to Zambia for two weeks in September 2014.
Upon joining the WISE CDT programme in 2015, Alex opted for modules in management concepts, urban drainage, and waste water management and he takes a keen interest in hydraulic modelling.
During his gap year between A-levels and attending university, Alex worked for the year as a Chainboy for MWH Treatment UK on a £45+ million sewage treatment works upgrade scheme in Burton-upon-Trent. This work led Alex to become Junior Engineer during a summer placement on the same site, but focussing on tendering for a £7.5 million biological filter bed remedial scheme. Alex has also undertaken internships with Ch2m and Network Rail based in asset management teams focussing on bridge, culvert and retaining wall assessment and design.
Outside of academia and industry, Alex has a wide range of interests including being a qualified swimming teacher, rock climbing and undertaking the restoration of classic cars.
