Laura Wignall

Project: Flood forecasting as a tool for flood management

Supervisor: Professors Zoran Kapelan and Slobodan Djordjevic

Academic Background
Laura is a PhD student on the WISE CDT course, and will be completing her research at the University of Exeter. Prior to joining the WISE program, Laura graduated from the University of Reading with a BSc (Hons) in Human and Physical and Geography, and went on to complete a MSc in Water and Environmental Management at Brighton University. Her dissertation was entitled “A critical evaluation of household level drinking water treatments promoted for use in emergency settings by the Red Cross”.

Laura found that the first year of the WISE CDT enabled her to explore water informatics, and how these tools can be applied to the global water challenges that are faced today. Modules completed include: Programming for Engineering, Computational Hydrology, Environmental and Computational Hydraulics and Mathematical Modelling of Wastewater Treatment.

After completing the first year, Laura identified her interest in exploring flood forecasting as a tool for flood management in urban areas, particularly real-time forecasting.
